How to choose a removal company in London
London has more removal companies than anywhere else in Britain, and the gap between the good ones and the rest is wider here too. The verified list above is the short route. For the long route, use the checklist we apply ourselves: check the legal name on the quote against Companies House, ask what the insurance actually covers and up to what amount, and get a proper survey before you accept any price. The same failures repeat across company after company, and once you know them you will spot them in the first phone call.
Our full guide - how to choose a removal company covers the whole checklist, including the red flags.
Moving in London
Parking outside your door
Most London moves start with a parking problem. Most streets sit inside a controlled parking zone, and a removal lorry standing outside your door usually needs a suspension or a reserved bay from the council that runs your street. Notice periods and fees are set borough by borough. Several councils want two weeks or more of notice, and once the daily fee and the administration charge are added the total often runs into three figures. If your street is a red route, the application goes to Transport for London rather than the borough and takes longer, so give your removal company the postcode early. A firm that asks about parking at the quote stage is doing its job. One that turns up and hopes is not.
Charges your removal company drives through
The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every London borough. Vehicles that miss the emissions standard pay £12.50 a day, and that bill lands on whoever runs the van. The Congestion Charge covers the central zone at £18 a day between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and from 12pm to 6pm at weekends and bank holidays (Transport for London rates, checked 22 October 2026). A compliant operator prices these into the quote, so ask whether the price already includes them. If one quote comes in suspiciously cheap, this is one of the first places the difference hides.
Crossing the river
Rotherhithe Tunnel is too narrow for most removal lorries, which leaves east London with the Woolwich Ferry, the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels, and the Dartford Crossing further out. A charge applies at the tunnels between 6am and 10pm, and the Dartford Crossing charges in both directions. That geography is why a move from Barking to Greenwich is not the short hop the map suggests for a loaded lorry, and why crews that know the city plan the crossing before the day, not during it.
Flats, mansion blocks and lift bookings
In a flat, the building matters as much as the boxes. Mansion blocks and newer developments often need the service lift booked in advance through the managing agent, with a time slot and sometimes a deposit, and council and housing association blocks have their own move day rules. Book the lift before moving day, not on it, because when the lift is out of order that morning someone walks the sofa down eight flights. Ask any company you shortlist what its plan is for upper floors and long carries from the van.
Terraces, conservation areas and narrow stairs
Victorian and Georgian terraces were not built with wardrobes in mind. Tight staircases with winders, sash windows that come out for large items and doorways too narrow for a three seater are weekly work for a good London crew, and hoist jobs are routine in places like Kensington, Hampstead and Chelsea. Conservation area rules can also restrict where a lorry may stand. This is exactly what the survey is for. A company that measures access before quoting is protecting you from a surcharge on the day.
When to book
London moves cluster at the end of the month, on Fridays and through the school holidays, and the good firms fill those slots first. Four to six weeks of notice is comfortable for most moves, and month ends and August should be booked earlier still. London traffic has its own opinion about your schedule too, so a realistic quote builds in time for the road, not just the loading.
Man and van in London
A man and van is the right tool for single items, student moves and small flats, and London has more of them than any other city. Indicative rates for a van with a driver and one helper run from roughly £50 to £90 an hour, usually with a two hour minimum, and central London jobs sit at the top of that range (indicative market rates compiled by Removal Dude, October 2026, not partner-validated quotes). The risks are real. Many man and van operators carry little or no goods in transit insurance, and if they take your old sofa to the tip without a waste carrier licence, the legal responsibility for it follows your rubbish, not their van. Ask both questions before you book. Above the size of a small flat, a full removal company with insurance and a crew of its own usually costs less per box than people expect.
How much do removals cost in London?
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Studio or 1-bed flat | GBP 400-800 |
| 2-bed flat | GBP 550-1,000 |
| 2-bed house | GBP 650-1,100 |
| 3-bed house | GBP 900-1,600 |
| 4-bed house | GBP 1,300-2,500 |
Indicative ranges for Greater London compiled by Removal Dude, October 2026, from typical rates for full service household moves with a two to three person crew. These are not partner-validated quotes and they are not an offer. Access, packing, parking and season all move the final price, and the only accurate number comes from a survey of what you actually own.
Price depends on access, packing, and season. The removals cost guide breaks down what moves actually cost across the UK.
What cheap removals in London actually buy
Cheap removals in London are not a different product. They are a smaller job done properly. A man and van is the right buy for a single item, a student move or a small flat, and booking mid-month or mid-week instead of a month-end Friday is the cheapest legitimate saving you can make, because that is when good crews sit free. Above the size of a small flat, the honest version of cheap is a full crew priced for the whole job, which usually costs less per box than an hourly van that overruns.
The dishonest version hides the cost until moving day. When a quote comes in well under the rest, ask what it includes. Does it cover the ULEZ and Congestion Charge the crew drives through, the parking suspension your street needs, and goods in transit insurance up to a real value? An hourly price also looks cheaper than it is once the job runs long, because the clock keeps going while a second pair of hands is missing.
The way out of the guessing is the survey. It is what turns a phone estimate into an accurate quote, because someone has seen the stairs, the parking and what you actually own before any number goes in front of you. Tell us about your move in the form above and the companies we verify will price the real job, not the booking. FAQs
Can I book removals in London at short notice?
Sometimes, and it depends on the week. Mid-month and mid-week slots free up most often, and some firms keep a crew back for same-day and next-day work. Month ends, Fridays and school holidays are a different story, and the better companies are full for those slots well ahead. If your move is urgent, put the date on the form. The firms we work with would rather say no than promise a crew they do not have.
How far in advance should I book a London removal company?
Four to six weeks is comfortable for most moves. Book two months ahead if you are moving at a month end, on a Friday or in August, because that is when everyone else is moving too. Deposit rules vary, so ask what is refundable if your completion date slips. Chains do slip.
Do removal companies pack for you?
Most do, and it costs less than people expect for the time it saves. Full packing means the crew arrives a day or half a day before the van with boxes, paper and tape and packs everything. Partial packing usually covers the kitchen and the fragile items only, and self packing with your own materials is the budget route. Ask whether materials are included in the price, because on some quotes they are a separate line.
Do removal companies dismantle and reassemble furniture?
It is standard practice for anything that will not go through the door whole. Beds, wardrobes and table legs come apart on the way out and go back together at the other end, and the crew brings the tools. Mention anything unusual, such as a wardrobe with a broken fixing, at the survey rather than on the day.
Will a removal company take unwanted items to the tip?
Not automatically. Carrying household waste is a licensed activity, so many removal companies will not take your old sofa anywhere, and the ones that do should hold a waste carrier licence and say so on the paperwork. The legal responsibility for fly tipping follows your rubbish whoever drives the van. Ask at the quote stage and treat clearance as its own line item.
Do London removal companies sort out parking permits and suspensions?
The good ones either arrange the suspension for you or tell you exactly what to request from the council, because some boroughs want the householder's name on the application. Ask at the booking stage. If nobody has asked you about parking yet, that is a question to put to them before moving day, because a lorry ticketed or moved on halfway through loading costs far more than the suspension fee.
Should you tip your removal crew?
Tipping movers is customary in the UK but never expected, and no good company builds it into the price. If the crew has handled your move well, a tenner or so per person at the end of the day is a fair gesture, and people often offer tea, coffee and lunch instead or as well. Cash is easiest on the day.
Do removal companies disconnect washing machines?
Many disconnect washing machines as standard, and crews carry the spanners to drain and isolate them. Plumbed-in items beyond a washing machine, such as showers, and anything involving gas are a different matter, because some firms want a qualified trade to handle them. Tell the surveyor everything that is plumbed in or wired in, and the quote will state who does what.
What is the best day to move house?
Mid-week and mid-month. Those dates are in less demand, so they are often cheaper and crews are not rushing between jobs the way they do on a Friday. Fridays and month ends suit people around leases and completions, which is exactly why they cost more and book up first. If you have a choice of date, take the quiet one and put the saving towards the move.
